### Join us for the Great Compassion Repentance Ceremony (Daebi Cham, 대비참), a traditional Mahayana Buddhist practice devoted to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, the embodiment of Great Compassion.
Join us for the Great Compassion Repentance—a Mahāyāna practice of offering, prostration, vows, repentance, and chanting the Great Compassion Dharani. Rooted in the Thousand-Hand Sutra (Cheonsu-gyeong), this tradition helps clear karmic obstacles, calm the mind, and renew your practice.
The ceremony includes:
– Incense and flower offerings to invite the presence of the Buddhas and sages
– Homage and repentance before countless Buddhas and Bodhisattvas
– Chanting and bowing in reverence and sincere contrition
– A contemplative space for inner renewal and spiritual humility
This is a meditative and ceremonial practice of renewal and inner purification.
It is open to everyone, regardless of background or belief.

## The Tradition
The roots of this practice go back to Zhiyi (智顗), founder of the Tiantai school, who established a repentance ritual based on the Qing Guan Yin Sutra. In the Song dynasty, Master Zhili (知禮) developed the Great Compassion Repentance grounded in the Thousand-Hand Sutra (Cheonsu-gyeong).
Zhili emphasized not just chanting the Dharani or reciting Avalokiteśvara’s vows, but integrating their meaning into one’s inner practice. Thus, the Great Compassion Repentance became a profound method of uniting with Avalokiteśvara’s vows through repentance, meditation, and realization of ultimate reality.
Today, by joining this assembly, we continue that tradition in modern temples, relying on Avalokiteśvara’s great vow-power to transform our lives.

Every week on Wednesday until September 19, 2025
