Introduction to Computational Thinking and Ethics in Data Science

Details

This Spring, Cal Poly's Data Science Initiative is running a series of python-based Data Science workshops for faculty professional development.

We are able to open a limited number of spots to the general public. You can sign up through the PyData SLO Meetup listing: https://www.meetup.com/PydataSLO/events/276975128/

Please see the description below for the first workshop, Introduction to Computational Thinking and Ethics for Data Science.

There is no fee for this workshop; however, we are asking that you make a donation to the Cal Poly Black Student Scholarship Fund (https://www.calfund.org/calpolyblackstudentfund/) in lieu of a workshop fee. The suggested donation is $25.

This half day (3.5 hour) training workshop aims to introduce researchers to computational thinking and the ethics of data science and computing.

Programming is a powerful and engaging tool in science, however, just learning syntax can be daunting and amorphous without starting with the basics of computational thinking. We aim to make explicit some of the `habits of mind' of computer scientists along with introducing some foundations and motivation for including ethical considerations with any computational project (especially those involving data and conclusions about data).

Topics include: an introduction to computational thinking (data and small patterns), the role and importance of ethical considerations in computing and data science and hand-on activities practicing with these concepts.

No experience necessary.

Upcoming Workshops:

Introduction to Programming with Python (April 10-11)
Introduction to Data Science with Python (May 1-2, tentative)
Designing Data Science Course Modules (May 22-23, tentative)
