The first Survey of the LINNET!

The initial voyage of the USS LINNET on its survey mission of the DMZ has begun with it's share of surprises and intrigue. Vulcan scientist Valan and his intrepid crew of explorers set out from Starbase 310 towards Volon III to complete a survey for the Native American Council in hopes of finding a suitable planet for colonization. Upon initial scans of the planet, Valan detects the intact hull of a older model Cardassian surveyor, The RAJAN. It had crashlanded on the suface almost a hundred years earlier, buried in the wake of its crash under a mountainslide, only to find itself partially exposed and thus detected by the LINNET due to recent seismic activity. Upon communicating with the RAJAN, they found that most of the crew had died, and only a handful of the original crew were still alive, aged and infirm, along with a few generations of Cardassians that were born on the planet. The LINNET's Engineer, the half Klingon Na'noc, busied himself with making the RAJAN spaceworthy again while the LINNET's Betazed Security Officer, Jani, unraveled the story of the of the Cardassians crash and survival through questioning survivors and exploring the ship's data files. The crew of the LINNET was busily preparing to bring the RAJAN intor orbit when an Orion Fast Escort, ONA'S RICHES, came into the system to inquire about what the LINNET was doing on Volon III. Captain Valan began a tense negotiation with the Orion Captain, Horatio V. Hellpop, while getting Cardassian sick healed by the ship's EMH and trying to strike a proposal with the aid of ship's Ferengi Communication officer, Lox, on how to best handle the situation without undue bloodshed. When it was determined that the Cardassians never officially laid claim to the planet, Valan proposed a deal with Hellpop; The LINNET and therefore the Federation Science Council would lay claim to Volon III for the NAC, and the ORIONs would get full salvage rights to the RAJAN once all cardassian personnel where safely removed. Captain Hellpop readily agreed to such a prize without any need for violence, and once the USS ENTERPRISE-D under command of Captain Jellico arrived to take the Cardassian Survivors, all ships soon departed the system safely.
In the aftermath, it has been concluded that there will be a series of tense negotiations between the Cardassian Union and the Federation on many points.
1. The Cardassians argue that even though the RAJAN is no longer on planet nor officially staked a claim to Volon III, the point that there was a de facto "colony" of Cardassians were already there, with Cardassians being born, living, dying and still buried on Volon III, the Cardassian Union has initial claim to the planet.
2. The Cardassians government further argues that the USS LINNET had no right to sell the RAJAN to the Orions, salvage or otherwise, as Cardassian crewmen were still aboard the ship.
3. As of a week after the incident, the Cardassians have yet to recieve the Cardassian survivors to Caradassian territory and space. They have inquired about the actual existence of the crew and whether or not they were fabrications or worse yet, killed by the crew of the LINNET or the ENTERPRISE in order to lay claim to Volon III. As such, they have declared the crew of the LINNET to be little more than privateers and to be deemed a hostile force to Cardassian Military Personnel.
The Federation Science Council and the sector at large will be watching the actions of the LINNET with increasing concern as they continue their mission.

Matt;
First of all what a GREAT story! The following is an excerpt from Chief Engineer Na'noc, of the LINNET's personal log: What a great start to a long lasting mission and adventure! It will be very interesting to see what is going to happen in the next few missions as we, the crew of the LINNET have made enemies of the Cardassian Union. I wonder what excursions we will encounter in the next few missions. As the Chief Engineer, I will ensure that I complete all needed maintenance and see if I can use some of the credits we earned in this mission to purchase some upgrades for our weapons and shield arrays. Well, I better get to it, right after a nice warm cup of Blood Wine in our version of 10-forward, or what I like to call the LINNET Lounge. I'll keep the rest of the crew posted on my progress, Chief Enginner Na'noc OUT."
