Adam Back is a pioneering cryptographer and one of the earliest and most influential figures in the Bitcoin community. He is best known as the inventor of Hashcash, a proof‑of‑work system proposed in 1997 to limit email spam and denial‑of‑service attacks — a concept later adopted as the consensus mechanism underlying Bitcoin’s blockchain.
Back holds an M.Sc. in Distributed Systems from the University of London’s Royal Holloway and has contributed extensively to applied cryptography research. In 2013, he co‑founded Blockstream, a leading Bitcoin infrastructure company that develops layer‑two scaling solutions (such as the Lightning Network) and enterprise blockchain tools.
A member of Bitcoin’s core developer community, Back is widely respected for his deep technical expertise and clear advocacy of Bitcoin’s principles of decentralization, security, and sound money. He regularly speaks at major cryptocurrency conferences worldwide and serves as an advisor to numerous blockchain startups and open‑source projects.
