Dumb crypto & the trade-space between authenticity, confidentiality, & privacy

Details

Lunch will be provided, donations accepted.

Dumb crypto has been around for a while thats universally available in standard libraries thats already adopted, vetted, accepted, understood. Examples include hashes, digests, PKI digital signatures, software threshold multi-sig, encryption both symmetric and asymmetric, XOR accumulators, One Time Pads, even DH key exchange. These are all over 20 years old.

If all you have at your disposal is dumb crypto what can you do with it? Or if all you have is white magic crypto what spells can you cast? For example how to solve the problem of third party correlation protection using dumb XOR accumulators and one time use content addressable identifiers and pseudonymous identifiers. How to do key management of dumb crypto. How to synchronize key state in a secure way with dumb crypto.

This presentation will explore the capabilities and limits of dumb crypto and compare it with the black magic of "smart" crypto in building systems that have authenticity, confidentiality, and privacy.
