Lillith awakes in the care of the Oankali, aliens who have swooped in to salvage what they can of humanity after it has nearly extinguished itself in a nuclear war.

Lillith is tasked with awakening her choice of fellow humans from suspended animation to make a new community on Earth, which the Oankali are restoring. However, the Oankali are not benevolent and want to 'trade' for genetic material with the humans, planning that the next generation born on Earth should be human-Oankali hybrids.

Covers oddly similar themes to our previous book around the human condition, the societies we form and what of our behaviour is or isn't inevitable, but does it through disturbing and fascinating dystopian fiction.
