Canada is considered a tolerant and secular country, but a century ago it was a staunchly religious country where the government could and would send outspoken atheists to prison using the blasphemous libel law. Within this context, outspoken skeptics and unbelievers agitated and resisted these dominant cultural forces.

In this form, Dr. Elliot Hanowski will present on his research on this topic, which culminated in his book Towards a Godless Dominion. Early 20th century irreligious and anti-religious organizations, including the group in Winnipeg organized by Marshall Gauvin, will be discussed.

We'll learn about what was different a century ago and what we can learn for today.
