Dec. UU Humanist Forum: Origin and Future of Humanism
Details
This Forum will discuss the thoughts of Dr. A. C. Grayling on the Origin and Future of Humanism. Dr. Grayling is a philosophy professor at the New College of the Humanities and vice presidents of Humanists UK.
Making use of a pre-recorded presentation by Dr. Grayling, forum attendees will receive an insightful overview of the origin of humanism stretching back to its Greek roots. The philosopher traces the history of concepts of morality, ethics and virtue and their relevance to humanism. He focuses on what constitutes a good life, self knowledge, compassion, individual responsibility and the importance of being a good neighbour. Dr. Grayling recognizes the dramatic increase of secularism world -wide, the resulting decline in religion and the relevance of humanism.
There will be breakout group discussions after the presentation, where participants can reflect and engage with fellow attendees on the key themes of the presentation.
The Humanist Forum will be held at the Unitarian Church, from 7:00 to 9:00 on Wednesday, December 10th. Refreshments will be served. Please join in an evening to stimulating thoughts and discussion.
