What is the sound of income inequality, air pollution, or refugee migration over time? When is music the most appropriate medium for data visualization?

In this talk, artist and computer scientist Brian Foo will share how he produced music using public datasets. He’ll explore the opportunities, challenges, and conflicts that arise when a data scientist can use music to manipulate how a listener feels about a dataset. Brian will also speak to other aspects of his work that use time and immersive media such as coloring books, dinnerware, and the lights in his apartment to create slow but meaningful data visualizations.

Speaker Bio

Brian Foo is a Data Visualization Artist at the American Museum of Natural History where he designs interactive exhibits using scientific data and research. He most recently designed a permanent exhibit about climate change in the Museum's Hall of Planet Earth using open data. His personal work uses data to create music, objects, and physical spaces, and has been featured in Information is Beautiful, NPR, and the Museum of Art & Design.
