Design Beyond Devices with author Cheryl Platz

Details

At our March meetup, author Cheryl Platz will be joining us for a Q & A session! Join us as we discuss her book "Design Beyond Devices: Creating Multimodal, Cross-Device Experiences"

~8 hour read | 369 pages | Published December 2020

About the book

Multimodal experiences are experiences that can engage multiple human senses. Twenty years ago, your PC (generally) only engaged you visually, and you only engaged your PC with touch. You have many more options today (see Chapter 7, “The Spectrum of Multimodality,” to fully understand all those options), but those options bring a lot more complexity to the design party. Learn the techniques you'll need to build fluid, adaptive experiences for multiple inputs, multiple outputs, and multiple devices.

Agenda

6:00pm - Doors open
6:20 - Moderated Q & A with Cheryl (She will join us via Zoom)
6:45 - Open Q & A from the audience
7:00 - Networking

You don't have to finish the book to attend!

Everyone is welcome to hang out and chat about the topic, even if you're not familiar with the material. As a matter of fact, most of us aren't experts on the book topic, which is why having the author on hand makes for awesome question-asking and answering.

"But Chris, why are we meeting in person if Cheryl will be joining us over Zoom?"

You won't need to hear "hey, your mic is muted" or squint to see someone's smiling face. There is no lag IRL. You won't have to worry about unexpected background noises. It's easy to avoid talking at the same time as someone else. And there will be pizza!

This is a welcoming space for anyone working in tech (or are tech-curious) to check out 1871 and meet people outside of your normal day-to-day routine.
