Welcome back to The UX Crunch, where we are exploring one of the most fundamental aspects of Experience Design. For every experience designer, new or long-standing, understanding the principles behind human behaviour and incorporating them into your design process is vital. In this event, we'll be discussing how behavioural psychology influences the way we research for and design products for our end users. We will be exploring how by conducting research which unearths particular human behaviours and by understanding their emotional triggers, we can design products with a more rich, seamless experience and which foster trust, work properly and maximise the potential of users returning.

On Tuesday 27th, The UX Crunch will be joined by three great designers and psychologists, each utilising their backgrounds to research for and design more engaging products. All talk details are below!

Dr Nick Fine - Lead User Researcher @ The Home Office

An introduction to Psychology and UX

Psychology is the study of human behaviour. User experience is the practice of achieving optimal interaction between human and computer. Whilst there have been psychologists practising UX from the very start, the two worlds are now coming together. It will have big implications for the way we design products and services, the UX skills market, the UX process and the very practice of UX research itself. In this talk, Nick will give you an introduction to Psychology and what it means for you, the UX practitioner. How do your research to identify behaviour? How do you design for behaviour? How do you design for personality? Does it even work?! Of course, it does, and during the talk, Nick will give concrete examples of how designing for human behaviour helps achieve optimal interaction.

Nick Fine is a UX practitioner and has been for almost 10 years, back when UX consultants did both research and design. He holds a PhD and MSc in HCI and a BSc in Psychology. He successfully defended his PhD thesis in 2009, entitled “Personalising Interaction Using User Interface Skins”, where he established both a novel means for establishing personality type from keyboard and mouse usage as well as relationships between design elements (colour, shape, meaning) and personality type.

Emotions, emotional design and how it can help you to be successful in UX

Psychology is behind many successful design projects.

Stunning insights from psychological research, real life design examples, and several research projects will tell you a story why you should always take into account human’s emotions when designing.

It is not easy to integrate user research into agile development processes. But only with researching user groups and discovering their needs and the hidden emotions driving them you can create really successful products.

The implication of psychology on the design and product development

Psychology is the study of people or groups. It draws an account of mental process, intelligence, motivation, phenomenon, brain process, human interaction etc. Psychological research and its methodology (quantitative and qualitative) allows us to have evidence that supports those studies.

Without realising it, theory and psychological approaches are part of our everyday lives (home, work, activities such as sport, performing art). These approaches are relevant from the day we are born to the day we die (child development, health etc.). It is interesting to see the involvement of psychology through the design of a new digital product.

A very important psychological aspect of the product development is to understand user needs, behaviours, perception, and how they use the product. Nevertheless, understanding organisational culture, and people that are involved in the product development (stakeholders, clients, agile team members etc.) is also very important to creating a great product. This presentation will look at this from an organisational perspective, how the use of psychology will facilitate the design of a great product.

Emmanuelle has a PhD in Psychology, she is a solutions-driven Lead UX, user research and digital strategy specialist working around the globe. Her speciality is to put users and their needs at the centre of her investigation. She uses reliable research methodologies quantitative and qualitative coming from Psychology, HCI, Ethnography, Ergonomics, Human Interaction etc. to collect and analyse the data.

Emmanuelle is able to extract important elements in an unstructured environment and develop recommendations based on evidence from research, leading to simplification, prioritization and synthesis of complex ideas.

Emmanuelle is regularly invited to speak at conferences and social UX events. She will be talking next July at the Human and Computer Interaction international conference in Las Vegas. She is also currently writing up a book on the A to Z of user research and its incorporation to the product development circle.

Norm is Dead

Norm is dead and that’s not a bad thing. User Experience, like economics and marketing, has been trapped by ideas drawn from Social Psychology that are flawed.

Breaking free of many of the key ideas of psychology that people accept as true liberates design to create truly global products and services that match the diversity of humanity. This talk draws from new research that is critical of many of the existing models of human behaviour. It’s about understanding there are no Edge Cases, the Normal never existed and Diversity is the foundation for a new way of imagining and building products.

Alastair Somerville is a sensory design consultant. He provides expert advice on cognition and person-centered design for both physical and digital products to companies and public organisations (including Google and the Scottish Government). He facilitates workshops on sensory and emotional design for corporations and major conferences, including SouthBy Southwest (SxSW), UX Week, Interaction and O'Reilly Design. He is currently involved in cognitive accessibility projects for public transport in London and design for transcendent user experiences.
