Be smart about smartphones

Details

For our first meetup of 2024 we'll be digging into UX & Service Design for mobile apps

In the UK, according to the Global Media Intelligence Report 2021 from Insider Intelligence, 96.1% of respondents polled owned a smartphone, up from 95% in 2020; and 77.1% owned a desktop/laptop, down from 80.1% from the previous year.
Other more recent research shows that 90% of mobile time is spent in apps, and only 10% browsing the rest of the internet. The trajectories clearly indicate that mobile app engagement is only going to increase.
How should this then affect considerations to build apps over responsive websites and how does UX design differ?

Neelesh Sonawane (Principal Consultant @ Zuhlke)
In this talk Neelesh will discuss how apps can offer a superior user experience over responsive web. How personalisation, notifications, better accessibility features and device hardware can be harnessed to provide richer and more engaging interactions over responsive websites. But, this doesn't relegate responsive, rather each delivery method has it's merits, its benefits and advantages as much as its limitations and failings, and how that can suit different services.

Stacey Rey (Lead Product Designer @ Coherence and founder of the UX Guide to the Galaxy Podcast)
In her talk, Stacey will share what she’s learnt about the differences in designing for mobile vs desktop.
She will be focusing on software design, and why you’ should build software variations on mobile, and how you would achieve this.
She’ll ponder the question; Is software or SaaS just for Desktop? As well as having a focus on desktop and mobile differences in general.

The meetup will be held in Zuhlke's office
11 Ducie St, Manchester, M1 2JB (right next to Piccadilly station)
