WATCH PARTY: The Prestige (2006) dir. Christopher Nolan @ Mary Pretlow Library

Details

We will be in the big room, Meeting Room 1, for this movie which I haven't seen in quite a while. (But a lot of Nolan enthusiasts say it's his best film!) (h/t cinephile Mike)

I did just see Bale in another Victorian period movie on Netflix, 2022'sThe Pale Blue Eye, which was quite good!

RUNTIME: 130 minutes

SYNOPSIS (via Warner Bros): The Prestige is a British-American mystery thriller film written, directed and co-produced by Christopher Nolan, with a screenplay adapted from Christopher Priest's 1995 novel of the same name. The story follows Robert Angier and Alfred Borden, rival stage magicians in London at the end of the 19th century. Obsessed with creating the best stage illusion, they engage in competitive one-upmanship with tragic results.

Priest's epistolary novel was adapted to the screen by Nolan and his brother, Jonathan Nolan, using nonlinear narrative structure. The film was released on October 20, 2006, receiving positive reviews and strong box office results, and Academy Award nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction.

BLURBS:
"It's quite a movie -- atmospheric, obsessive, almost satanic." - Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

"It's a very cool piece of filmmaking -- as it has to be, given the intellectual sleight-of-hand that lies at its heart. Yet it succeeds as both great entertainment and an absorbing rumination on the dangers of playing God." - Sandra Hall, The Sydney Morning Herald

"It doesn't want to explore epistemological questions about the nature of perception and memory; it just wants to mess with our heads. And as a wily, slightly sadistic chess game of a movie, it succeeds quite nicely." - Dana Stevens, Slate
