Valencia Money Talks

This group is for people who want the knowledge and the practical skills to navigate a complex world, and who would rather build them alongside people they trust than alone in front of a screen.

We start with money, because everyone deals with it and almost nobody was taught it. Where it goes after that is up to the group.

Free, no prior knowledge assumed, nobody selling anything.

WHY

The knowledge is public now. Anyone can find a course, a book, or a thread. Accessing knowledge is pretty easy. The hard part is getting enough clarity to use any of it, in a world that is loud, full of stimuli, and very good at offering you something easier to do instead.

The other problem is that most of the people explaining this stuff have a position in your decision. A product to sell, a fund to fill, a referral link, an audience to grow. What actually transfers is knowledge from people you trust, who learned it the hard way, and who have nothing riding on what you do next.

We aim at building a group of people who know each other well enough to ask real questions and get real answers, on whatever they are actually trying to figure out. If that part works, the rest follows: better decisions, fewer expensive mistakes, and a few genuine friendships.

What happens at a meetup?

Every two weeks, Wednesday evening, in a bar in Valencia. [Venue TBC]

▪️ 19:00 doors, drinks, talking to each other
▪️ 19:30 someone introduces a topic they prepared, around 20 minutes
▪️ then open discussion: questions, disagreement, working through it together
▪️ 20:30 structured part ends, most people stay for another drink

The first sessions are on money, because it is the common denominator: what inflation does to savings, where to actually keep it, what happens when banks fail, alternative money such as Bitcoin and crypto. From there the group decides. Career moves, geopolitics, technology, negotiation, health are all fair game, and the person who knows the most about it is the one who should present it.

Capped around 20-25 people, small enough that everyone gets to talk. [Languages: English 🇬🇧 and Spanish🇪🇸]

PRINCIPLES

1. FREE
   Participation is free. If a venue or printed material costs something we might split it, and that is the whole of it. Nobody makes money from attendance.

2. NO GURUS
   Nobody here is beyond questioning, including whoever is presenting. This is peer learning. Challenge any idea. Prepare a session on something you know.

3. NO PROFIT
   Nobody pitches financial products, funds, MLMs, crypto projects, or anything else to the group. Anyone using the community to profit from its members is out.

4. CONFIDENTIALITY
   What is shared in the room stays in the room.

5. NO TECHNICALITIES WITHOUT EXPLANATION
   No technical words without unpacking them, no assumption of prior knowledge. Asking the basic question is the most useful thing you can do, and it usually helps three other people who did not ask.

6. RADICAL HONESTY OVER COMFORT
   This is how we talk to each other generally. Say the real thing: when you disagree, when you did not follow, when you think someone is fooling themselves, when you have no idea what you are doing. No polite vagueness, no nodding along to look competent, no softening something into meaninglessness to keep the room pleasant. It applies to the group itself, so if a session was bad or something here is not working, say that too. And it runs both directions: expect to receive it as directly as you give it. Nobody here needs managing.

7. INDEPENDENT
   The group does not belong to, or depend on, any other community, company or initiative. We collaborate with other people and organizations, we do not answer to them.

8. DECENTRALIZED
   The aim is that this survives any one of us leaving. Members run sessions, more than one person organizes, notes and materials are shared. [Right now Mattia and Fred carry most of it, and that is a starting point, not the design.]

9. INTERDISCIPLINARY BY DESIGN
   Money is the entry point, not the boundary. The common thread is making informed decisions in a complex world, and no single discipline covers that. If enough people want to spend a session on something that has nothing to do with finance, that is the group working as intended.

10. NOT A SALES CHANNEL
    Nobody sells to members, including the people who run this. No products, no services, no upsell into a paid version. There is no paid version. Whatever any of us does for a living happens somewhere else, with people who are not here.
