Woodpeckers are fascinating birds, and with the trees bare of leaves and the forest quiet, this is the perfect time of year to spot these charismatic creatures in action. We will search for all seven of the woodpecker species that are full- or part-time residents in our area: the bold Pileated, the tiny Downy, the striking Red‑headed, the sturdy Hairy, the poorly named Red-bellied, the flashy Northern Flicker, and the winter‑visiting Yellow‑bellied Sapsucker. We’ll listen for their rhythmic tapping, search for their feeding holes, and learn some of these birds' remarkable adaptations as we travel the grounds of Lundale Farm.

What to expect:
A guided outing led by experienced naturalists
Tips for identifying local woodpecker species by sight and sound
A closer look at feeding signs and woodpecker adaptations
A relaxed, family‑friendly pace perfect for all nature lovers

All ages and birding experience levels are welcome to join us (children must be accompanied by an adult.) The terrain where the red-headed woodpeckers have been wintering is away from the farm road and will be uneven, vegetated, and probably quite wet, so good waterproof boots are strongly recommended. This outing will last approximately 2 hours. A portable restroom is available on site.
