Celebrate Migratory Bird Day in Swarthmore's Crum Woods
Details
May 9th is World Migratory Bird Day! Join a walk in Swarthmore’s Crum Woods to welcome back the birds who wintered in warmer climates. The 202-acre Crum Woods is one of the last largely forested areas in Delaware County and offers crucial habitat for migrating birds as well as those who reside here year-round.
Walk organizers will lead the search for birds both common and unusual, including the Baltimore Oriole, Wood Thrush, Northern Parula, Warbling Vireo, Chimney Swift, Eastern Kingbird, Red-eyed Vireo, Northern Flicker, Red-shouldered Hawk, Belted Kingfisher, and Common Yellowthroat. The walk will cover a mile to 1 ¼ miles of moderate terrain with some hills.
All levels of birding experience are welcome, and children are most welcome if accompanied by an adult. Wear sturdy shoes suitable for potentially rutted and muddy trails and bring binoculars if you have them. If you have extra binoculars you would be willing to lend to another participant, please bring them as well. Heavy rain cancels the walk.
Meet at 7:45 am at the Swarthmore train station. The walk will begin at 8:00 am and last about two hours. The leaders will keep a list of birds observed during the outing which will be posted to the Valley Forge Audubon Society website where all participants can access it.
Please note that there is no restroom available at the Crum Woods.
This outing is co-sponsored by the Swarthmore Bird Town Working Group. For more information, email [advocacy@valleyforgeaudubon.org](mailto:advocacy@valleyforgeaudubon.org).
