Polar Bear Swim at English Bay, 2023
Details
Need a sure sign that we are getting past the pandemic life? Vancouver's official Polar Bear Swim is back at English Bay for 2023!!
Let's welcome the new year with a swim. Whether it is your 1st or 15th time, a cold water plunge on New Year's Day is a great way to let go of the old and bring in the new.
This will be my 17th official Polar Bear swim in Vancouver. I have also plunged in Antarctica and the Arctic.
Curious? Tips for First Timers
- Wear shoes or boots that are easy to slip on/off. A pair of water shoes that you can go in the water with are ideal.
- Prepare your warm clothes and towel before you go in so you don't have to dig through your bag with cold hands.
- There is an ongoing debate on whether to slowly immerse yourself or get it "over with" fast. Personally, I prefer to run in, so exhilarating!
- Alcohol lowers your body temperature and accelerates hypothermia so save it for after your swim.
- Most of all, have fun with it! Yes, you will be cold, that is a given, but it will make your first day of 2023 memorable.
Not ready for the plunge? Towel holders and cheerleaders are welcome!
