Talk about algorithms

This is a weekly meetup open to anyone who is interested in algorithms. Last week we talked about statistics (biased and unbiased estimators), cellular automaton (Conway's game of life), and predictive text (efficient data structures and Markov Models). We also worked on algorithm problems such as finding ways to optimally sample a moving data stream with a fixed size window (oddly specific, but a very cool problem nevertheless). Another highlight was that one group member showed some results from applying a genetic algorithm to the problem of packing objects into a shipping container. This Sunday we will do more of the same.
