Book Club Intro Coffee Chat (No Reading Yet!) - How High We Go In The Dark

Details

Hi, future book-club friends!

Join us for a relaxed coffee hangout at Waves Coffee House – Howe (900 Howe St, #100) on Saturday, June 14, 2025 at 3 PM. There’s no homework, no set agenda—just good conversation and fresh lattes while we get to know one another.

We’ll chat about our first pick, How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu, and swap ideas for future reads. Depending on turnout I will organize future meetings on Meetup to pace ourselves. There are 14-chapters overall. If you need help getting the book, I can share some ways 🏴‍☠️ at the meetup on Saturday.

I'm debating whether to do 2 chapters per week, or 4 chapters every two weeks with in-person discussions. Let me know your preference at the meetup 🙂. I will likely provide questions/guidance on the book to keep some semblance of organization. If you'd like to keep more tabs on this book club, I will also be organizing a WhatsApp group on the day of this meetup.

#### Why this book makes a great opener

  • Linked short stories = low-pressure reading
Each chapter stands alone, so anyone who falls behind can still join the discussion without spoilers.
  • Big themes in bite-size pieces
Pandemics, climate change, grief, hope, and cosmic wonder—plenty to unpack, yet told in digestible episodes.
  • Multiple voices & settings
From an Arctic research station to futuristic theme parks, the shifting perspectives keep things fresh and invite varied viewpoints.
  • Emotional range
The book balances heartbreak with dark humor and moments of awe, sparking rich conversation rather than one-note reactions.
  • Accessible length & style
Clear, contemporary prose (~270 pages) makes it easy for busy schedules while still offering literary depth.

Feel free to grab a drink before you sit down—supporting the café is always appreciated.

RSVP if you’re in, and update if you can’t make it so someone else can snag a seat. See you on the 14th for coffee and conversation!
