Behind The Installation: From Digital Auras To Virtual Breath

Have you ever wondered what it takes to create an interactive installation for a live event? In this meet up, we have two very special presentations that will cover some of the challenges in creating, building and testing a completely new form of interaction for a public setting.
First up, we have three members from Sensate Digital (#powertothepixels) here to give us an inside look at their process in building an interactive light-based installation called “Liminal Convergence” for the recent Bass Coast Festival held in Merritt, B.C. Designing a fully functional, seven foot square, double-sided LED wall is a challenge in and of itself; now imagine transporting it to the dry dusty desert while dealing with power limitations, harsh weather and very rowdy festival goers! Darren DeCoursey, Carissa Owlette and Tim Fernandes will discuss the design, fabrication, and software development that went into making their concept a reality and hopefully provide tips for those looking to design something of their own.
Next up is Mirjana Prpa, a UX Researcher and PHD candidate exploring the boundaries of VR. In this in-depth presentation, she and her collaborator Kivanç Tatar will talk about their work on an immersive virtual environment entitled “Pulse Breath Water” that employs breathing as the main mode of the interaction, and how this work went through a transformation from head-mounted experience to a gallery-scale dance performance and installation for the Olympics 2016 cultural program. They will discuss this process with all of the challenges their group encountered as well as the excitement of working in a long-distance collaboration, with a focus on a shift from a virtual to physical space.
Following the presentations we'll open up the floor for TAD Talks, the creative technology show and tell. Everybody is welcome to take over the projector for 5-10 minutes and share what they're working on in a casual atmosphere.
