Everyone knows universities are expensive.
The more interesting question is whether they still know what they are for.
This episode of Philosophize This! uses Alasdair MacIntyre to ask a sharper question than the usual “college is too expensive” conversation. Modern universities can produce experts, credentials, departments, research, career pipelines, and impressive technical ability. But do they produce judgment?
MacIntyre’s worry is that education becomes fragmented: people get trained to be useful inside a system without being taught how to ask what the system is actually doing. You can become highly competent and still have no serious answer to what your work means, who it serves, or what kind of person it is making you.
That feels worth talking about in Vancouver, where everyone is trying to survive rent, build a career, collect credentials, and not become hollow in the process.
The arguments worth having

• Should universities create workers, citizens, thinkers, professionals, or something else?
• Is “practical wisdom” teachable, or does school mostly reward cleverness and compliance?
• Are credentials making people more educated, or just more sortable?
• What happens when experts know their field but not the moral meaning of their work?
• If universities have lost the plot, who is supposed to recover it?
