๐๐ถ Chungking Express - lonely people moving too fast
Details
VIFF movie outing - public screening, optional short chat after.
Short summary
Some movies feel like the city is dreaming in public.
Chungking Express is one of those.
Lonely cops, missed connections, food counters, pop songs, people trying to act casual while their inner lives are absolutely not casual. Wong Kar-Wai makes heartbreak feel stylish, funny, and weirdly breathable.
This VIFF screening also includes a live Cantopop element from Chen Baker, which makes it feel less like a normal rewatch and more like a small event.
That is the reason to go.
Not nostalgia for the 90s as decoration.
Not film-bro coolness.
A night about mood, music, loneliness, and people trying to find each other inside a city that keeps moving.
A few questions already sitting in my head
- โWhy does this movie make loneliness feel so alive?โ
- โIs style hiding the emotion, or carrying it?โ
- โWhich character feels most trapped inside their own routine?โ
- โWhat does the music do that dialogue could never do?โ
- โIs this a romance, a city poem, or a film about missed timing?โ
- โWhy do some movies feel more like a memory than a plot?โ
How the evening will go
Weโll meet at VIFF Centre before the screening, watch the film together, and whoever still has energy can stay for a short chat after.
This is a public VIFF screening, not a private Meetup event.
Please buy your own VIFF ticket while available.
