Location update
We are now meeting on the 8th floor of Vancouver Central Library, in the cafeteria/vending machine section behind the elevators.

🤝🧠 Hidden Brain - why is kindness so awkward?
Podcast discussion - listen beforehand.
Short summary
Everyone likes the idea of being kind.
Then real life shows up and people suddenly get weird.
We hesitate.
We overthink.
We assume we’ll bother someone.
We underestimate what a small message, favour, compliment, check-in, or gesture might actually mean.
This Hidden Brain episode, “A Secret Source of Connection,” gets into that strange gap: the good thing people could do, and all the quiet little reasons they don’t do it.
The episode features psychologist Amit Kumar discussing why people hesitate to help or express kindness, how we misjudge the effect of kind acts, and how prosocial action can strengthen connection.
That sounds soft.
It is not.
Because underneath this is a very current problem: people are lonely, cautious, socially tired, and weirdly afraid of doing the simple human things that keep relationships alive.
Not a self-help sermon.
Not “be nice” wallpaper.
Not forced vulnerability.
A real conversation about connection, awkwardness, generosity, and why people often need each other more than they admit.
A few questions already sitting in my head

  • “Why do people hesitate to help when the cost is actually small?”
  • “Do we underestimate kindness because we are bad at imagining other people’s inner lives?”
  • “What is one small supportive thing someone did for you that mattered more than they probably knew?”
  • “When does helping feel generous, and when does it feel intrusive?”
  • “Are people becoming lonelier because they care less, or because they are more afraid of getting it wrong?”
  • “What kind of kindness actually strengthens a relationship instead of just performing goodness?”
  • “Why is it sometimes easier to be useful than to be emotionally available?”

How the afternoon will go
Come having listened to the episode.
We’ll start with one question:
“What is one small act of kindness you still remember?”
Then we’ll stay close to the episode: hesitation, misreading people, underestimated impact, friendship, support, and the awkward courage of reaching out.
Not therapy.
Not everyone pretending to be emotionally enlightened.
Not turning kindness into a personality brand.
A grounded conversation about why connection is often simpler than we make it, and harder than it should be.
