The “Encore” Society: Business and Work Strategizing for the Second Half of Life

In his seminal text entitled, “Encore: Finding Work that Matters in the Second Half of Life” Mark Freedman inspires us and lays out a framework for how to find work that matters in the second half of life.

The average life expectancy in Canada for both men and women (combined) is now 83.11 years. So this group is for folks over 41.5 years of age, i.e., in the second half of life. It is also intended especially for people who, for whatever reason (early retirement/returning to work from retirement/medical issues/angst/other factors) disengaged from regular work but are now wanting to re-engage in one way or another.

Here are the questions that will guide the coffee conversations (though you will not be expected to share all answers with others—you will share what you want):

  1. How would you like to spend the next five or ten or twenty years?
  2. What community or national or global problems motivate you to act?
  3. How much income do you need to earn?
  4. Do you want to stay in the same field or explore something new?
  5. Do you want to start your own business or organization or do you wish to work for someone else?
  6. Are you willing and able to go back to school or get other training?

The “Encore” Society will meet monthly at 5 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month at a café in Vancouver. If the above has piqued your curiosity, please join us. The organizer, Lorne Prupas, can be reached by email at lorne.prupas@gmail.com or by phone at 604-716-4203.
