What we’re about
In his seminal text entitled, “Encore: Finding Work that Matters in the Second Half of Life” Mark Freedman inspires us and lays out a framework for how to find work that matters in the second half of life.
The average life expectancy in Canada for both men and women (combined) is now 83.11 years. We are living longer. And better.
So this career transitions group is intended for people who have gotten to the second half of life and are looking for something new. It is meant especially for people who, for whatever reason (malaise in their current work/early retirement/a desire or need to return to work from time off for whatever reason/a reignited search for purpose) are wanting a "fresh start" and a shift in mindset.
Here are some questions that guide our conversations:
- How would you like to spend the next five or ten or twenty years?
- What community or national or global problems motivate you to act?
- How much income do you need to earn?
- Do you want to stay in the same field or explore something new?
- Do you want to start your own business or organization or do you wish to work for someone else?
- Are you willing and able to go back to school or get other training?
The Over 50 Career Transitions Group generally meets monthly on the second Thursday of the month, from 5 to 7 p.m. Those present have an opportunity to share what drew them to the group and to get to meet others in similar circumstances. In addition, a "topic de jour" (generally previously selected by group participants) is presented by Lorne and typically animated discussion ensues. If the above has piqued your curiosity, please join us. Though there are no guarantees, most who attend meet at least one person with whom they "connect" and whose story is similar to theirs!

Many people navigating career transition later in life are carrying far more than just a job search.
They may also be:
- Caring for an aging parent, dependent sibling, or struggling adult child
- Feeling emotionally depleted while still needing to earn an income
- Experiencing guilt for wanting more, resentment for feeling trapped, or shame for being tired
- Wondering quietly: “Who is taking care of me while I take care of everyone else?”
This Meetup offers a thoughtful, supportive space to pause, reflect, and connect with others who are in career transition, who are over 50 years of age, and who truly understand these pressures.

## What This Session Is About
This is not a lecture or a job-search bootcamp.
It is a space to:
- Feel seen and less alone
- Better understand your stress patterns, limits, and values
- Listen deeply to others in similar circumstances
- Reframe self-care as necessary capacity-building—not indulgence
- Identify one small, realistic next step that restores agency
As one guiding idea reminds us:
“Exhaustion is not a personal failure. It is a signal.”

## What We’ll Do
The Meetup includes short reflections and three interactive conversations (in pairs or triads), focused on:
- Mapping the weight you’re carrying
- Exploring guilt, resentment, and the values underneath
- Identifying one pressure you no longer want to absorb alone
- Naming a realistic next step—not a grand solution
You are always free to share at your own comfort level.
