WEAVING THE THREADS:
Powell Street Culture and Legacy

This tour and photowalk will take us to one of the oldest parts of the city. In addition to learning about the storied history of the area we will have an opportunity to photograph it. Our guides will ensure that we have adequate time to photograph along the way. They have added upto an extra hour onto the tour to accommodate us.

Desciption:
This tour moves through the Powell Street area, which has significant historical importance as the heart of the Japanese-Canadian community. At one point there were nearly 600 Japanese businesses here.

It was a major centre for not just Vancouver's Japanese population, but Canada's, with thousands living within a short walk to the community's centre.

We will learn about the Community, labour movements and their efforts to secure better conditions, often through protest. The tour will also touch on the impact of internment during World War II and its lasting legacy that continues to influence the area today.

As we explore the area, please be mindful and respectful of the local residents and community. We kindly ask that no photos be taken of individuals we may encounter during the tour. Staying together as a group will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. The tour will proceed rain or shine, so please dress accordingly and bring extra water, as we’ll be outdoors for an extened period of time.

HOW DO I GET THERE?
Check your route details on Google Maps or at www.translink.ca. You can also drive.....for information on downtown parking lots.....www.bestparking.com/vancouver-parking. There is also metered street parking.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
A camera … any camera … including the camera on your phone. Our hosts have requested no tripods and that you bring minimal gear. I suggest one camera and one lens.

WHAT CAN I PHOTOGRAPH?
Being that this is one of the oldest parts of the city, I can only imagine what we might see. Many reminders of what was Japantown still remain.
