VICE, DICE AND OPIUM PIPES
Dark alleys. Shady deals. Big personalities. Travel back to a time when Vancouver was an “open town" — ruled by gamblers, bootleggers, and crooked cops.
Meet real-life characters like Joe Celona (our own Al Capone) and Yip Sang, a Chinatown powerhouse.
Oh, and Babe Ruth? He made headlines here, too!
This tour and photowalk moves through Vancouver’s historic Chinatown and delves into the darker aspects of Vancouver’s past. We can expect to learn anout the opium trade, the city’s early gambling, bootlegging and the various societal issues that accompanied these activities.
Our guides will ensure that we have adequate time to photograph along the way. They have added at least an extra 1/2 hour onto the tour to accommodate us. We might not use it all, but is built into the timing
As we explore the area, please be mindful and respectful of the local residents and community. We kindly ask that no photos be taken of individuals we may encounter during the tour. Staying together as a group will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. The tour will proceed rain or shine, so please dress accordingly and bring extra water, as we’ll be outdoors for an extened period of time.
HOW DO I GET THERE?
Check your route details on Google Maps or at www.translink.ca. You can also drive.....for information on downtown parking lots.....www.bestparking.com/vancouver-parking. There is also metered street parking.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
A camera … any camera … including the camera on your phone. Our hosts have requested no tripods and that you bring minimal gear. I suggest one camera and one lens.
WHAT CAN I PHOTOGRAPH?
Being that this is one of the oldest parts of the city, I can only imagine what we might see. Many reminders of what was Chinatown still remain.
