Happy 2017 Web Speeders!

Here's a speedy kickoff to the new year with two great web performance talks on Feb 15th @ 6:00pm. Mobify is donating the event space at a NEW location: 725 Granville St, Suite 420 . The talks start promptly at 6:30pm, please arrive between 6:00 and 6:30 to avoid disrupting the speakers and being locked outside in the freezing cold.

There is a maximum capacity & this event fills up, so RSVP early, and keep your status up to date. I'm looking forward to seeing you again in a couple weeks!

First talk: Progressive Web App Performance: Speed Through Intelligent Caching

Speaker

Our first talk is from Dr. Daniel Brook-Roberge of Mobify. From a past life, Daniel holds a PhD in physics, but now he works to prove Einstein wrong by making sites faster than the speed of light in his capacity as front-end performance guru extraordinaire.

Abstract

Progressive Web Apps bring native app-like speed & features to the web browser using standards-based technologies.

This talk discusses how we've used Progressive Web App technologies at Mobify to improve both real and perceived performance through intelligent caching. The talk will cover improvements to in-site navigation performance through the caching of data in a Redux store, and also improvements to load and reload performance using a ServiceWorker to avoid waiting for the network.

Second Talk - Reinventing web performance

Speaker

Our second talk is by Peter McLachlan. Peter is Mobify's Chief Product Officer and part time performance advocate emphasizing holistic visitor experience.

Abstract

A man is out in the street after dark, searching the ground under a streetlight. A passerby asks what he’s looking for. The man says, “My contact lens, I lost it in that bar.” The passerby is confused, “Why are you looking for it here then?” and the man answers, “Because the light is much better out here!"

Everything is wrong about how we measure web performance. As developers and scientists, it’s easy to focus on certain measurements because we can measure them, not because they’re the right things to measure.

In this talk, I review the sad state of web performance measurement and identify the criteria for a better, holistic, user-centered (and business relevant!) suite of performance measures.
