Well it's time to start off our new 2013/14 season at VanLUG.
Our usual monthly meeting will be held this coming Monday, September 16, from 7:00-10:00pm in Room 7000, SFU Harbour Centre, 515 West Hastings Street, one block south of Waterfront Skytrain Station.
Our meeting this month will focus on Ethics, specifically Technology and Privacy. Recent disclosures have raised levels of concern about digital privacy, and given them a new sense of urgency. Some are saying the internet is no longer trustworthy; that without privacy it is broken - hacked and repurposed. Solutions are needed: technical, moral, legal and political.
Our speaker this month is well qualified to address this issue. Dr. Richard Rosenberg is a long time Director of the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association, and Professor Emeritus (Retired) in the Department of Computer Science at UBC.
His work in the social impact of computers includes such areas of concern as privacy, freedom of expression, intellectual property rights, universal access, work and education. He has written many papers on free speech, ethics, and privacy issues, has appeared before Federal parliamentary and provincial legislative committees, and made presentations before the U.S. National Research Council.
His most recent book is The Social Impact of Computers, 3rd Edition, San Diego, CA: Elsevier Academic Press, 2004. He is also a Vice-president of Electric Frontier Canada and on the Board of the British Columbia Freedom of Information and Privacy Association.
After the presentation we'll raffle off a number of books and then adjourn to Steamworks for drinks and conversation.
