Our next monthly meeting will take place, as above, on Monday, February 16, from 7:00-10:00pm, in Room 1425, at SFU Harbour Centre, 515 West Hastings Street.

Our topic this month will be PostGreSQL or PostGres if you prefer. [PostGres] is an object-relational database management system (ORDBMS) with an emphasis on extensibility and standards-compliance. As a database server, its primary function is to store data, securely and supporting best practices, and retrieve it later, as requested by other software applications, be it those on the same computer or those running on another computer across a network (including the Internet). It can handle workloads ranging from small single-machine applications to large Internet-facing applications with many concurrent users. Recent versions also provide replication of the database itself for availability and scalability.

Our speaker will be Joshua Drake who is coming up from Bellingham. Mr. Drake is a PostgreSQL Consultant and has been consulting on PostgreSQL since Postgres95. Throughout his PostgreSQL career he has performed a variety of functions within the community including releasing an O'Reilly book on PostgreSQL, being part of the sysadmins and advocacy teams. Further he ran a biannual conference series dedicated to PostgreSQL between the years of 2007 - 2011. He is a Director for SPI (the non-profit for PostgreSQL.org). Lastly he is also a Founder, Director and current President of United States PostgreSQL. So he should be a very interesting and well informed speaker.

As is our usual practice, we'll have a book raffle to raise funds for VanLug, and then adjourn to a local establishment for refreshments and networking.

So come on out, win a book, meet some friends, support VanLug and learn something new about PostGres.
