Modify your FOSS (beginners welcome too)

Where: Simon Fraser University Harbour Centre

515 West Hastings Street, Vancouver

Rm 2245

When: November 16th, 2015

Time: 7:00 PM

In lieu of a speaker this month, VanLUG will be hosting a night of software modification! What's this you ask? We have many users of Free Open Source Software, but only a very small portion of us make changes. Whether you hack on FOSS all the time or have never had the chance to, come out to grab some src and make some changes to it. Bonus points if you push your contributions upstream!

But contributing to FOSS doesn't necessarily even have to be coding. One can modify interfaces (or any graphics in the application really!) to look and function better than they are, one can test new features in bleeding edge versions of the software, some projects can even benefit from having people do documentation (be it commenting in source code or writing guides via a wiki).

I will likely be in a corner crying over some HTML/CSS that just won't do what I want it to, so if this sounds fun to you, come out and play with some code (or however else you feel like hacking)! If you're new and don't know how to get started, you can poke the guy in the bandana with dreadlocks and I'll be happy to help you get set up.

Agenda:

6:50 PM Doors open

7:00 PM Introductions / socializing

7:15 PM Start hacking

9:00 PM Close doors
