Talk: "Embeddings in Machine Learning" with Lara Thompson

Machine learning has revolutionized many fields, including natural language processing, computer vision, and speech recognition. One of the key components of these advancements is the concept of embeddings, which refers to the process of representing complex data structures, such as words or images, as real-valued vectors in a high-dimensional space. In this talk, I'll give a brief overview of the history of embeddings, discuss why they are important, and explain what exactly they are. I'll explore the various types of embeddings, their properties, and how they are used in practice. I'll delve into the topic of training embeddings, focusing on supervised and self-supervised methods and touch on recent research in training embeddings across modalities.
