"Start Something That Matters" - Afternoon Book Club + Cocktail Hour on Zoom

Details

Vancouver Entrepreneurs & Business Builders presents:
AFTERNOON BOOK CLUB + COCKTAIL HOUR (via Zoom)

We will be sharing our thoughts, between drinks and snacks, on Zoom, about the book 'START SOMETHING THAT MATTERS' by Blake Mycoskie, and other ideas, stories, and topics that happen to wander in.

Blake Mycoskie is the founder of TOMS SHOES, a shoe company that pioneered the one-for-one (aka. buy-one-give-one), for-profit, social business model. As of November 2019, the thriving company has given away 95 million pairs of shoes to children and people in need in 82 countries.

Here's the INTRODUCTION to the book:
"In Start Something That Matters, Blake Mycoskie tells the story of TOMS (which he started with no previous experience in the shoes or fashion industry) one of the fastest-growing shoe companies in the world, and combines it with lessons learned from such other innovative organizations such as Method Products, charity: water, FEED Projects, and TerraCycle. Blake presents the six simple keys for creating or transforming your own life and business, from discovering your core story to being resourceful without resources; from overcoming fear and doubt to incorporating giving into every aspect of your life... "

You will also find out:

  • how someone who never made a pair of shoes, attended fashion school, or worked in retail created one of the fastest-growing footwear companies in the world by giving shoes away.
  • how organizations such as 'charity: water', 'method', and 'FEED Projects' got their start.
  • how to love your work, work for what you love, and have a positive impact on the world—all at the same time.

JOIN US ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22 @ 2 PM(Vancouver Time) ON ZOOM!

ONCE YOU'VE RSVP'd, THE ZOOM'S LINK SHOULD APPEAR. (It's a new feature on Meetup, so I don't know how it works either. Contact me if you don't see the link upon RSVPing or if you have any other questions and/or concerns.)

WHAT'S REQUIRED: You will need to have finished reading the book, which takes around 3 to 4 hours, or at least more than half of it.

WHERE TO PICK UP A COPY OF THE BOOK: Amazon Kindle or Kobo are the easiest ways, but since it's an older book you may be able to also pick one up at your local used bookstores.

ADMISSION: FREE
DRINKS: Whatever you like. Do show off your cocktail making skills!
SNACKS: Sharing is not required.
ATTIRE: Dress to impress (Upper body anyway)

MORE POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF ATTENDING THIS EVENT?

• If your goal is to be able to enjoy what you do while doing good by making the world a little better place for others, this may be a book that could give you the insights and inspire you to action.
• If you have yet to used Zoom, currently the most popular conferencing platform, this will be a good chance to take it for a test drive. (Confession, I have only used Zoom once and that was years ago.)

This will be our 1st Book Club/Cocktail Hour meeting on Zoom. If all goes well, we will make it a bi-weekly event. I'm setting the meeting time at 2pm this time, but depending on the majority consensus. Do drop me a line on that.

Hope to see you soon!

Cheers,
Jonathan
