Mahabharata Movie Night

Details

The Mahabharata is a classical tale of the battle of our higher vs. lower tendencies in the battlefield of our hearts. It is an ancient story and is the context in which the Bhagavad Gita is taught. It is older than The Iliad and Odyssey, and is over 6 times longer than both of those combined! More importantly, however, is its ongoing relevance in the daily life of modern Hindus, unlike Homer's stories here in the West.

We will be showing the Peter Brooks’ version of the Mahabharata, which will cover the entire back story of the Pandavas and Kauravas, two royal families meshed in a fratricidal conflict. This film will take us right up to the beginning of the war between the families and their allies, where, placed between the two armies ready for battle, Krishna delivers the Bhagavad Gita to his wavering friend, Arjuna. The movie is in English and features an international cast in this film adaptation of a well-received stage play by the same director.

If you have ever wanted to better understand the lead-in to the Gita but were never inclined to read this lengthy book, this movie is your opportunity to learn the fundamentals. Knowing this story makes the Bhagavad Gita much more relevant from the outset. Serious students of Yoga are highly encouraged to study the Bhagavad Gita, as it complements other works like Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and gives a complete overview of the essence of the Upanishads and Vedic philosophy.
