James Cameron's Titanic was released in December 1997 and held the title of the highest grossing movie of all time for twelve years. This was until James Cameron's Avatar was released in December 2009. Then Avatar became the highest grossing movie of all time. I well remember the nine years (through mid-2019) that these two James Cameron movies (Avatar and Titanic) reigned as the first and second highest grossing movies of all time.

It took thirteen years for Avatar 2: The Way of Water to finally be released, in December 2022. Shockingly, joint production and marketing costs were one billion dollars. How could it possibly even break even? James Cameron told the studio it was "the worst business case in movie history." He said "You have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That's your threshold."

Avatar 2: The Way of Water indeed DID become the third highest grossing movie of all time, with a global box office of $2.32 billion. (And 2009's Avatar is still the highest grossing movie of all time.)

This coming Friday, Dec. 19th, movie history will be made with the premiere of Avatar 3: Fire and Ash.

Where to Meet: At 7:30pm, we will meet inside the lobby (just inside the front doors) of the AMC 34th Street 14 Theatre, located at 312 West 34th Street (between 8th Ave. & 9th Ave.). Look for our group standing **just inside the front doors to the theatre**. At 7:45pm sharp we will walk upstairs as a group to the 8:00pm showing of Wicked: For Good. (Don't be late, and it's good to plan to be early.)
