Info for Saturday's Vegan Drinks

Happy Thanksgiving, Vegan Drinkers!

I stopped by the Figueroa Hotel today to talk to the head bartender and scope out the joint. It's a cool space and it should be easy to find us because we'll hopefully be the only people there (the Lakers game starts at 6:30). If you enter from Figueroa, walk through the lobby to the pool area in the back. If you enter from the gate off the alley in the back, you'll be next to the pool and will see where to go.

The drink menu is very traditional. The four beers available are vegan-friendly, but the two wines may or may not be vegan (barnivore.com has no info). They have a huge selection of mixed drinks to choose from. The bartender was promoting something called "Raunchy Raspberry" while I was there, which used a vegan-friendly but otherwise evil (e.g. high fructose corn syrup) pina colada mix. As long as you don't get a mixed drink with cream liqueur in it you should be ok.

Parking in this neighborhood, especially because there will be a Lakers game that night, can be EXPENSIVE, but the bartender tipped me off to a $7 or $10 lot on Francisco between 8th and 9th streets. If you're headed north on the 110, exit 9th street and make an immediate left on Francisco. The parking lot will then be on your left. If you're heading south on the 110, exit 8th street, curl left to 9th street, make a left on Francisco, and the parking lot will be on your left. After exiting your car, walk back to 9th street, make a right on Figueroa, and you'll be at the hotel. If you want to try to find street parking, I suggest heading a few blocks east of Figueroa.

Another interesting thing about this venue is its proximity to LA Live, the relatively new dining/entertainment experience downtown. I wandered around LA Live today looking for vegan dinner options and the best I could come up with is pricey veggie rolls at Katsuya. A few other restaurants have salads that may be passable. The vegan sorbet at the New Zealand Ice Cream Company on Figueroa south of 9th (about a block from the hotel) is definitely worth your while. The passion fruit sorbet is intense!

I look forward to seeing you all on Saturday. Have a lovely holiday.

Jason
