Tin Can / Trough / Equestrian Switchback Trails - Intermediate Hike
Details
Join the Sundays at 10 Hiking Series in cooler ground as we take on the Tin Can, Trough and Equestrian Switchback Trails.
The trailhead starts from the Valley View Vista Point pullout on Deer Creek Rd.
This hike starts at an elevation of just under 8000' making it at least 10° cooler. The hike is approximately 3.5 miles with a total elevation gain of about 750'. The challenge is the elevation gain in a short distance.
We will drop down onto the Tin Can Trail, hiking at a steady decline for about 2 miles. Can you spot the tree with the tin cans?
We will then start our ascent on the Trough Trail, gaining about 200' elevation in about 1/2 mile.
Then the work starts as we gain over 500' elevation over the next 1 mile on the Equestrian Switchback Trail.
Terrain & Scenery: This is a typical hiking trail with dirt, rocks and pine cones. We will be hiking through the trees with plenty of shade and some amazing views of the Spring Mountains. Hiking poles recommended.
Trail Type: Loop
Parking: There is a paved pullout at the trailhead. Parking can be limited, so let's meet at the visitor center and carpool from there. I will be at the visitor center at 9:30 and ready to head to the trailhead at 9:45. **There are no bathrooms at the trailhead, so take advantage of the bathroims at the visitor center.
Directions: When you get to the circle, take the 3rd right to the visitor center. I will be standing next to my white Honda CRV in the visitor center parking lot.
This is a group hike and will be at a pace that encourages socializing, taking pictures, and enjoying the beautiful landscape. The elevation gain in the second half of the hike will be challenging for some (me) but we will stop as often as we need to.
*Guests must be 21. No fur babies.
