Catch Pen / Deer Creek Trails - Intermediate Hike In Lee Canyon
Details
Join the Sundays at 10 Hiking Series in the cool Spring Mountains as we head over to Lee Canyon Rd. where we will follow the CatchPen and Deer Creek Trails. This hike will take us up and over 5 ridges before reaching the 6th ridge where we will take a break then head back.
The trail head is at an unmarked pullout on Lee Canyon Rd., 11 miles from Rte 95.
We will start at an elevation of around 6500'' making it at least 15° cooler. The hike is just under 5 miles. The trail is a series of elevation gains and losses as we go up and over each ridge. The total elevation gain is just under 700'. We will do half of the elevation gain going in and the other half coming out.
We will start our hike with a quick 75' descent into a wash. After a short distance in the wash we will begin our climb up and over the 1st ridge. By the time we reach 1 mile, we will be on the 4th ridge and the highest point in our journey.
Our next mile takes us to the lowest point, lower than the elevation at the beginning. We will continue to ridge #6. Here we will take a break before heading back.
Terrain & Scenery: This is typical mountain dirt trail with some loose gravel. Due to the constant ascents and descents, hiking poles may be helpful. There are patches of shade along the way and if we are lucky, a fresh mountain breeze.
