Historic Railroad Tunnels - a hike for all levels
Details
Join the Sundays at 10 Hiking Series as we step back in time and follow the path of the historic railroad once used to transport the massive materials and equipment needed to construct the Hoover Dam!
Built in 1931, the railroad played an important role in one of America's greatest engineering achievements. The tracks were removed in 1962, and the route was transformed into a recreational trail in 1992. In 2007, the trail officially opened to the public all the way to Hoover Dam.
Come enjoy beautiful views of Lake Mead, walk through 5 historic railroad tunnels, and experience a little piece of Nevada history along the way!
This is a great hike for all levels of hikers.
The trailhead starts in the parking lot of the Hoover Dam Lodge. This is a large paved parking lot.
We will start at an elevation of around 1730'. The hike is just under 4 miles with about 100' elevation gain.
We will begin our hike with a quick descent down onto the trail. We will reach the first tunnel about a mile in. After passing through the 5th tunnel, there is a vault toilet and a picnic table. We will hang out here for a few minutes before we head back.
Terrain & Scenery: This is a well maintained packed dirt trail. Sturdy walking shoes will suffice. The trail is wide, allowing us to walk side by side rather than single file. We will have views of Lake Mead along the way.
Trail Type: In and Out.
Parking: Look for the Hoover Dam Lodge Trailhead sign and park in that area. (See pics).
Directions: if you put "Hoover Dam Lodge Trailhead" in your Navi you will find us. The address is 18000 US-93, Boulder City, NV 89005.
Driving Directions: Take I11/95S to the Boulder City Pkwy ext. Make a left at the Railroad Museum. Follow the Parkway to the Lodge on the left.
This is a group hike led at a social pace to encourage conversation, connection, and meeting new people while enjoying the outdoors. We'll take breaks as needed, stay together as a group, and focus on having a fun, welcoming experience rather than hiking for speed. Whether it's your first time joining the Sundays at 10 Hiking Series or you're a regular, everyone is welcome!
