Veterans Day Hoover Dam Scenic Hike

Veterans Day Hoover Dam Scenic Hike

Details

Upon further evaluation, it’s best that the trail start location is moved to the overflow parking lot across from the entrance to the memorial bridge parking area. I’ve learned that the total hike distance from the Hoover Dam Lodge would perhaps be over 10 miles, which exceeds my preferred maximum hiking distance of 8 miles. I’ve updated directions to the overflow parking lot on the “how to find us” entry of the hike description for anyone that might be meeting us at the hike’s starting location. The total hike distance from the overflow parking lot should hopefully be no more than 7 miles, which is a more compatible instance for getting a decent workout without being too strenuous. The MeetUp location and time at the Fiesta Henderson Casino remains the same...

In an effort to conserve fuel, we’ll MeetUp close to the main entrance sign at the Fiesta Henderson Casino (see the provided link for map directions). Look for a red Mustang GT gas guzzling convertible with a US Flag proudly displayed. We’ll then carpool to the overflow parking lot on the left side of the road just pass the entrance to the Memorial Bridge parking area.

This hike is a variation of the traditional Rail Road Tunnels hike with an alternate starting point, which will allow for a visit to the pedestrian overlook at the Memorial Bypass Bridge. From the overflow parking area, we’ll cross the Hoover Dam Access Rd to the Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge overlook, and trek via the Rail Road Trail through the 5 railroad tunnels and double back to the Hoover Dam. After taking in the sights at the dam and a snack brake, we’ll hike back to the overflow parking area and return to the MeetUp site at the Fiesta Henderson Casino. This is my first endeavor at this route and I’ve yet to accurately measure the distance. Though I would estimate it’s hopefully no more than 7 miles, which will probably take at least 5 hours as there’s a tendency to linger while viewing all the interesting sights.

As with all my hikes: there’s no scrambling or exposure. Although, there is a 1000 ft. drop to the Colorado River from the center of the pedestrian overlook. The view from the center of the pedestrian overlook is a voluntary there and back segment of the hike. I prefer not to endeavor such a height and will remain at the Pat Tillman Memorial while my fellow hikers enjoy the scenery. Kids are welcome to attend; however, dogs are not allowed on the bridge overlook or on the Hoover Dam. Be sure to bring at least 4 pints of water; a jacket, head cover, sunscreen and smacks are also recommended. There’s a snack bar at the Hoover Dam. It’s also a good idea to bring a comfortable pair of footwear to change into after the hike.

After the hike, I’m considering stopping at the Applebee’s near US-93 and Sunset Rd in Henderson for a free Veterans Day meal that’s extended to Veterans in appreciation of their service. Veterans will need to show proof of prior service or being active duty to take advantage of this offer. Of course, anyone on the hike is welcome to partake of the meal - not just veterans. Also, it would be considerate in buying something at the casino where we’ll be parking. Even the purchase of a soft drink should suffice as providing some benefit to the casinos for allowing us to park on the premises.

The current weather forecast for Nov. 11th at Bounder City is 61 degrees and sunny. I’ll post the weather forecast the day prior, which will make mention if the hike is postponed due to a forecast of inclement weather. Bear in mind when hiking to take only pictures and leave only Bigfoot prints…
