Splish Splash! Sierra Hot Springs River Camp III

Details

Back by popular demand!
Cool nights, hot springs and a smooth flowing river. Come out to the High Sierras for four days of camping, swimming, hiking and fishing.
We have 3 tent cabins deep in the Sierra Nevada Mountains at the Mono Hot Springs Resort where Jen (and Doug!) happily toil away in paradise. This hidden gem is one of Northern California's most beautiful resorts and a best kept secret. Located in the heart of the mountains you will enjoy crisp alpine air surrounded by lakes, rivers, hot springs and hiking trails.
Amenities
At the resort you can enjoy the the River Rocks restaurant. There is also a general store. The bathhouse has a massage studio (a massage after hiking is the best).
Attractions
The San Joaquin River runs nearby and is excellent for both fishing and tubing. Bring a floaty! A mile and a half hike away is the mineral-fed Doris Lake, warmer than your average lake and also a popular swimming attraction.
The hot springs are also within walking distance. You'll soak in a monarch butterfly habitat flanked by views of distant snowcapped mountains. There are so many hot spring pools in this area you can spend all day hiking and soaking and still not get to all of them.
5-6 miles up the road in two different directions you'll find Edison and Florence Lakes. Both provide ferry service which puts you closer to well-known scenic hiking trails including the JMT and PCT (be sure to secure a permit at the ranger station in Prather if you plan on backpacking these areas), in addition to being excellent swimming and fishing areas. Permits are not required for day hiking. Rental boats and SUPs are available at both locations.
Cost
Four days of wilderness resort accommodations: $82.00 per person total cost. That includes unlimited spa. My Venmo is @Jennifer-Jones-47301. I can also post the Venmo QR code in photos. If you need to pay with a different method call Paul at (702) 591-9270 to arrange your payment. This is first-come, first-serve. If you suddenly find yourself on the waitlist that means the event is filling up and you need to pay to secure your spot. There are no refunds. Once the event is full you may sell your spot to someone on the waitlist if you need to cancel.
We will sharing 3 large tent cabins that have solar lighting, Wi-Fi, fire pits, picnic tables, cooking grills and bear-proof storage. There are both single and double beds and as we get closer to divying up cabins couples are encouraged to bunk up in the double beds.
You also get free and unlimited access to the bathhouse where you can enjoy private mineral soaking tubs, hot showers, as well as the outdoor spa where you can soak up the sun on the patio by the spring-fed mineral pool.
There is limited space outside the tent cabins for 2 or 3 small tents if you really, really want your own tent. You still have bear-proof storage and full bathhouse access.
Getting There
Plan on getting an early start Wednesday morning because this is no small drive. You can expect to be driving 8 hours before settling in to your mountain retreat. Fuel up in Auberry and/or the Valero on the 168. THERE IS NO GAS once you reach Kaiser Pass Road. The last hour is spent on a one lane winding mountain road with pullouts and a 10mph speed limit. Granny drive this section. Where does this road lead? It leads to awesome. You are going to an amazingly pristine and remote area.
Upon arrival go to the general store to check in. Let them know you are a member of Vegas Hikers. Please get started early and figure out car-pooling in the comments.
Will It Be Cold?
At 6560' elevation you can expect 70s by day, 40s by night. Perfect camping weather. Bring layers and sunscreen. The tent cabins can be chilly at night so bring extra bedding, a cold weather sleeping bag, and good thermals or base layer for sleeping.
What do I Bring?

  • Bedding/sleeping bag. There are beds available in the tent cabins, but due to the slumber party environment you may wish to bring a thermarest or inflatable mattress.
  • Swimsuit and towel are a must.
  • Consider bringing daypacks, backpacks, floaties, libations, charcoal, cooking gear, sunscreen, fishing gear, coolers, medications and extra clothing.
  • Please do not bring in outside firewood (SNF restrictions for reducing pest infestations- it's the law). Firewood is available at the resort.

Kids/Dogs?
Sorry not on this one. Due to our shared accommodations there are no dogs or kiddos on this trip.
Bear Country
As a resort guest you have access to bear-proof storage for all of your food and 'smellables'. The bears generally avoid humans on the trail but they do love human food, so take advantage of the provided safe storage and do not leave food temptations in your car or leave coolers outside the cabins at night. Check comments for additional info on camping in bear country.
