Details

Communication around preparations, meetup location, carpooling, and lodging or camping arrangements will be handled privately through me via text and/or email.

This trip will be limited in size, and everyone must participate in the summer Charleston training series hosted by me in June, July, and August to demonstrate their ability to safely complete Wheeler Peak.

Liz’s checklist:

  1. Please thoroughly read the trip details & hike statistics. If you’re IN, then…
  2. RSVP to get yourself on the Waitlist - refer to comment about participating in the Charleston training series.
  3. Secure your lodging; accommodation suggestions are listed below.
  4. Text Liz 702-496-2455 with confirmation of your lodging.
  5. Please provide me with your cell # and email address.
  6. Move to Going List - again, refer to comment about participating in the Charleston training series. 😉
  7. We'll arrange carpools closer to the trip start date.

TRIP DETAILS:

📌This is a 3-day trip to Great Basin National Park in Nevada. On Friday, we will carpool/caravan for the 5-hour drive to Baker, NV, and do a pre-hike to Stella and Teresa Alpine Lakes. This will help us acclimate to the altitude, ensuring a safe and enjoyable hike on Saturday. On Saturday, the hike to Wheeler Peak starts early due to the potential for high winds & thunderstorms above the timberline. Saturday evening, we’ll relax amongst friends. Got a great telescope? Bring it! On Sunday, we return to Vegas with a brunch stop along the way for those who are interested.

The hike to Wheeler Peak is significantly shorter and has less elevation gain than Charleston Peak, but it starts and finishes at higher elevations, ranging from 10,200' to 13,100'.

HIKE QUICK STATS:

  • Distance: 8.5 miles
  • Elevation: 13,065 ft
  • Elevation gain: ≈ 2,900 ft
  • Class: 1
  • Exposure: None
  • Difficulty: Extremely strenuous at high altitude
  • Pace: Moderate
  • Time: 6 hours

ACCOMMODATION SUGGESTIONS:

GEAR:

  • Hiking boots or trail shoes are required
  • Trekking poles are optional but highly recommended
  • 2-3L of water, sun protection, snacks & electrolytes
  • Carry rain gear, a windbreaker, warm gloves, a warm hat, and a cover for your pack
