HIKE DESCRIPTION

You've probably seen Foundation Hill many times. It's right in Calico Basin. You can see if from anywhere on the paved road. It's very close and the elevation isn't big, but it still has a great view and some very interesting rock formations.

Because it's close to the trail head, Foundation Hill gets a lot of visitors. We'll visit some lesser known parts along our route. You'll be surprised at what's up there, including an arch that is in plain sight, but blends into the landscape. Also, in this area I've seen tortoises, spiders, chuckwallas and snakes. Check out my wildlife gallery for some of my favorite pictures of animals I've seen.

I first explored this area on my own many years ago. I developed a few routes in and around the area. I made sure this route has a different view of the arch than other routes. In addition, we'll get an idea of the many other routes that pass along, over, under and through the area.

This climb is steep and will get your heart pounding. It's pretty short, but it can be challenging for beginners. Don't underestimate the hill or overestimate your ability. Beginning scrambling is not the same as beginning hiking. But as long as you can handle a steep climb, then you can handle this.

You must be able to keep up with the group. If you can't keep up on the first hill, you will have to turn back.

• Helmets are always welcome. Be sure to use one that doesn't block your sight.

• Always carry "in case of emergency" numbers with you.

• No guests will be allowed without my prior approval.

YOU MUST BE ON THE "GOING" LIST IN ORDER TO GO ON THIS HIKE. CRASHING WILL NOT BE ALLOWED.
