This is the 3rd highest 14er in CA, after Whitney and Williamson. We will be camping at the trailhead and get an early start in the morning of the hike.
Driving to the trailhead:
It is a 5-hour drive from Las Vegas to the Barcroft trailhead. The last 16 miles are on unpaved rough road. High Clearance Vehicle is strongly recommended.
Camping at trailhead:
Once we get to the trailhead, you will need to setup how you will spend the night: in a tent or in your car.
Weather at trailhead and hike:
Weather at the TH will be COLD in 20 - 30s F range at night. High is forecast to be around 40 degrees F during the day.
Wind: This is a remote wilderness area with not much vegetation. It is typically windy, around 20 mph. Plan for protecting yourself from cold. Pack layers.
Rain:
There is currently a 13% chance of rain in the forecast. Poncho/rain jacket to be on the safe side.
Water:
There is no water around in that area. Pack all the water you think you will need for camping and especially while hiking. Plan for at least 3 liters of water just for the hike.
Altitude Sickness
You must have already done some high altitude hikes in the recent 2-3 weeks. We will be hiking at a slow pace. If anyone starts getting sick, we will stop and rest.

SAFETY is the number one priority
RESPECT everyone’s time - don’t be late; you’ll be left behind. Be ready to go BEFORE you arrive at the meeting place.
THIS HIKE MAY BE CANCELED DUE TO IF WEATHER IS FORECAST TO BE ADVERSE AND POSES A SAFETY RISK
Safety is the first priority. Therefore, all hikers in our group, including another leader who joins us, will stay behind the leader.
Group Hiking: Stay with the group behind the leader. If you don’t want to stay with us, you can always go hiking on your own, though it’s not recommended. Don’t run ahead. If you start to get too far behind, shout ahead before you’re out of range for someone to hear you. I always endeavor to keep track of everyone’s progress, but ultimately it’s your responsibility to communicate what you need.

Weather: The weather in the mountains can change quickly. Vegas can be hot but an unexpected storm in the mountains can become very cold. ALWAYS bring a rain jacket or poncho. Staying dry will save your life. Do not wear cotton clothing and bringing an extra layer is always a good idea.
Bring enough water, snack or lunch, sun screen. The peaks are often windy and cool. Bring a wind breaker jacket.
