Join us for an adventurous descent through Englestead Hollow, one of Zion's most dramatic slot canyons. Famous for its 300ft entrance rappel into a deep, narrow sandstone gorge. This technical canyon offers continuous action, canyon corridor views, and a memorable wilderness experience.

  • Technical Rating: 3B IV (Technical rappelling, potential cold water pools, long day)
  • Max Rappel: ~300 feet (91 meters)
  • Distance: ~9–11 miles total
  • Duration: 8–12 hours
  • Group Size: Limited to 6 participants (per permit regulations)

What to Expect

  • The Entrance: A drop off a massive headwall into the dark, sculpted slot below.
  • Sustained Technicality: Multiple subsequent rappels, downclimbing, and logjam obstacles.
  • Water & Conditions: Expect wading and potential swimming in cold pot-holes. Neoprene booties and a wetsuit/drysuit are required depending on seasonal water temperatures.
  • The Exit: Beautiful hiking out through Orderville Canyon and the Zion Narrows.

Requirements & Skill Level

  • Advanced Technical Skills Required: You must be fully proficient in setting up rappels, controlling long rappels, and managing personal safety on high-exposure anchors.
  • Fitness: High endurance needed for a long, physical day with heavy gear packs.
  • Gear Needed: Harness, helmet, mechanical descent device, safety lanyard, wetsuit (if desired), sticky rubber canyon shoes, and dry bags.

Important Notes

  • Wilderness permit is required and will be secured in advance.
  • Weather dependent: Flash flood danger strictly determines go/no-go decisions.
