This overnight is best suited for experienced, physically fit backpackers, comfortable with a strenuous Grand Canyon descent—and the equally strenuous climb back out. Backcountry permit restrictions keep this to a very small group—participation is limited.

There are places in the Grand Canyon where water feels almost impossible. Thunder River is one of them.

Starting from Monument Point, we’ll descend the Bill Hall Trail through the Esplanade and Surprise Valley to Thunder River, where rushing water and greenery suddenly interrupt an otherwise dry, exposed Grand Canyon landscape. From there, we’ll continue to Upper Tapeats Camp, roughly 9.2 miles and 4,800 ft below the rim, set up camp near Tapeats Creek, with some time to explore. The next morning, we simply reverse course—9.2 miles & 4,800 ft back up. We’ll get an early start with plenty of daylight for the long climb out. As for that glorious 4,800-ft descent the day before? Yeah... you haven’t gotten away with anything.😏

Two days. One night. ≈18.4 miles. Nearly 4,800 feet into the Grand Canyon—and every one of those feet back out.

Some places you visit. This one you earn.
