Snowshoeing to Raintree via Northloop Trail

Details

http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/5/f/d/4/event_79584532.jpegRaintree is one of the most famous place in the Mt.Charleston Area.It is 3000-year (or so) old bristlecone pine and oldest living thing in this area. (at least older than your grand mother)

Since this hike gains twice as much as Bristlecone Trail, I set this hike as 'intermediate/beginner' snowshoeing hike. I don't recomend this hike for first timer unless you are very strong.

I think many hikers have done this trail in the Summer Season. But have you ever hiked in Winter?
This event is sort of 'snowshoeing 102' class. That means, it is a little bit hard for the beginner. But the view from the Raintree is worth it.

Stats:
Hike: Raintree via Northloop Trail (snowshoeing) - Up and Back
Trailhead: Northloop Traihead
Distance: 5 miles - Up and Back
Elevation gain: 1,500+ ft
Elevation peak: 10,000 ft
Time: 5 - 6 hours
Difficulty: 2+

To participate in this hike, you MUST bring the following gear. Buy it, Rent it or Steal it. What ever it takes....

  1. Snow Shoes....You can rent snowshoes at Sports Charlet or REI
  2. Ski pole or Trekking pole (with snow baskets)
  3. Alpine Boots or Water proof Boots (with at least mid ankle)
  4. Gloves

Please bring some drink and snack too. We may stop at some point for short lunch.

Also, the following gear are recommended.

  1. Gaiters
  2. Ski Pants
  3. Beanie Hat
  4. Jacket/wind breaker...Wear in layers, but don't bring too many layers.
  5. Sunglass
  6. Sun screen
  7. Extra pair of socks

Tips:

Avoid any COTTON shirts/pants/socks. Once it gets wet (by snow or sweat), it will never dried out. Nylon or Wool is Better.

The water in the Camelbak hydration hose may freeze. Bring it in the bottle. Hot coffee or tea is a good idea if you have insulated bottle.

If you don't have Gaiters or water proof boots, bring plastic shopping bag and rubber band. And wrap your boots and lower pants with it. I can't guarantee it, but it may work...At least, better than nothing.

Very strong kids are OK.

Please No Dogs, No Cats and No Polar Bears unless you leash it whole time.

If you are not sure that you can make it, or you want to bring your kids, please drive your vehicle up to the trailhead. So, you can turn around anytime you want.

Carpoolers must pay $5-6 to the Driver. I may cancel this hike if the weather looks very agly. But, we will go even if its lightly snowing.
