There is a debate about the morality of eating honey and shellfish. On one hand, honey exploits bees, and some consider it "bee slavery." On the other hand, we kill insects when we drive a car, ride a bus, or harvest our vegetables. There is a similar debate with shellfish. Since simple organisms such as oysters and clams may not feel pain, Peter Singer initially suggested they likely don't feel pain and might be okay to eat. Later, he acknowledged uncertainty about their sentience and suffering. Does the utilitarian principle that only sentient beings capable of suffering warrant moral consideration fit the concept of veganism? Is there a clear ethical standard for vegans regarding these issues?
