VeloDCity Challenge-Ride#5-Poolsville/Sugarloaf w/a twist- 54 mi, 3200 ft

Event #5 of the VeloDCity Challenge -Urbana to Poolsville & over Sugarloaf - 57 miles & 4200 feet of climbing.

NOTE THE START AT THE PARK & RIDE IS ACTUALLY BEFORE (AND ON OPPOSITE SIDE OF ROAD FROM) THE EXXON GAS STATION (off I-270-W exit go straight at light into parking lot)

This is will be a B/A pace ride.

NOTE: A LIABILITY WAIVER WILL NEED TO BE SIGNED BEFORE THE RIDE - If you don't sign one you will not be allowed to participate in the ride - I will have waivers at the ride start.

For those of you that have ridden one of the various around Sugarloaf rides out of Poolsville, this ride will be along many of the same roads, but tackled in a different direction, as we will be starting in Urbana and heading south to Poolsville.

Expect a lot of rolling terrain along the way. From the start we will head south along rolling roads but steadily up for the first 10 miles or so before an ever slow slight downhill into Poolsville near mile 20, where we will have our 1st rest stop.

Rerouted due to bike race this weekend we will head back north to Bealsville then back down to Whites Ferry,  before looping back north, past the Dickerson Conservation Park, loop back to Bealsville and then over to our 2nd rest stop at around mile 40. From there we'll rather then circle around Sugarloaf we will attack it. A couple miles after the rest stop we'll reach Sugarloaf Mountain Park at around mile 42 where we will ride the 3 mile loop up and down the mountain.  The climb itself is about 1.5 miles, climbing about 460 feet (about a 6% average grade). After the climb comes a technical but nice descent.

Once the main climb of the day is done we will meander our way back to Urbana along familiar roads such as Old Hundred and the punchy Thurston Road.

Total distance:approx 54 miles

Total elevation climbed: approx 3200 ft
Pace: Medium: 14-17 mph avg; Category B/A ride
Terrain: lots of rollers, one nice climb up Sugarloaf Mountain
Start/Finish: Urbana Park & Ride off of I-270

We can grab some food post ride in Urbana for those that want to.

Following up on Rick's post and reviewing the various weather sites, given the high probability of thunderstorms I'm canceling the ride for today. Rain is one thing thunderstorms is another. For those that don't have Mom Day plans given tomorrow looks like a nicer day I plan on riding the route tomorrow, same time, same start place - 9 AM. If you want to join please just respond to this post and let me know so I can get a head count

I finished the Poolesville RR about 2 hrs. ago. Mostly overcast with no rain or lightening . Afternoon races are going on so if you want to ride later you should be OK.

Any call on the weather? Are we a go?

    May 10, 2014

    • Matt

Charles, just sent not canceling b/c high likelihood of the rain being via thunderstorms. I don't mind getting wet but dealing with thunderstorms is a different story

If anyone has room in their car for a lift from DC to the Poolsville metropolitan area, I have gas money and will throw in great conversation for free.

Matt, good to run into you the other day at HP; are you going to make a call on whether we ride Saturday morning? 60% chance of rain in the forecast. Do you have a postponed rain date? Sunday's forecast looks good but Mother's Day.

    May 9, 2014

    • Matt

I'll make the call in the AM, prior to time folks will start having to drive out there.

Hi Keith- I think you should take Ray up on his offer. Even fitting two people and two bikes in this car will be interesting. That said, let's all of us carless people talk offline as I have some thoughts for carsharing for future rides. -Tish

FYI. There's a bike race May 10th starting from Poolesville HS. The races run most of the day. I don't know if the race course includes part of this ride but I thought I'd give everybody a heads up.

I've decide to give the race a try. The race course includes a couple mile dirt section on River Rd.

The ncvc website shows the (a) course which is an ~11 mile loop SW of poolesville hs. I'm not certain if that's this year's course but it's probably close.

I actually had it on my personal calendar as being on the 10th for just that reason - changed it to a Sat 10th ride rather than Sun. thanks for catching
