Event #5 of the VeloDCity Challenge -Urbana to Poolsville & over Sugarloaf - 57 miles & 4200 feet of climbing.
NOTE THE START AT THE PARK & RIDE IS ACTUALLY BEFORE (AND ON OPPOSITE SIDE OF ROAD FROM) THE EXXON GAS STATION (off I-270-W exit go straight at light into parking lot)
This is will be a B/A pace ride.
NOTE: A LIABILITY WAIVER WILL NEED TO BE SIGNED BEFORE THE RIDE - If you don't sign one you will not be allowed to participate in the ride - I will have waivers at the ride start.
For those of you that have ridden one of the various around Sugarloaf rides out of Poolsville, this ride will be along many of the same roads, but tackled in a different direction, as we will be starting in Urbana and heading south to Poolsville.
Expect a lot of rolling terrain along the way. From the start we will head south along rolling roads but steadily up for the first 10 miles or so before an ever slow slight downhill into Poolsville near mile 20, where we will have our 1st rest stop.
Rerouted due to bike race this weekend we will head back north to Bealsville then back down to Whites Ferry, before looping back north, past the Dickerson Conservation Park, loop back to Bealsville and then over to our 2nd rest stop at around mile 40. From there we'll rather then circle around Sugarloaf we will attack it. A couple miles after the rest stop we'll reach Sugarloaf Mountain Park at around mile 42 where we will ride the 3 mile loop up and down the mountain. The climb itself is about 1.5 miles, climbing about 460 feet (about a 6% average grade). After the climb comes a technical but nice descent.
Once the main climb of the day is done we will meander our way back to Urbana along familiar roads such as Old Hundred and the punchy Thurston Road.
