TRIP TITLE / DATES / IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS:

Backpack Two Nights Big Sur Trail

VWA TRAIL CREW LEADER:

Betsy MacGowan

OVERVIEW:

BACKPACKING TRIP

HIKE 8 miles from the trailhead at Cold Spring Camp to Cienega Camp on the Big Sur Trail. We will need to squeeze in at Cienega Camp which has limited space. We plan to touch up any sections between Rainbow and the North Fork, then focus on the trail between Cienega and the Pine Ridge Trail. This is a long hike with several climbs/descents, and participants must be in good condition. The total elevation change on the hike in is -1457 ftNET. Elevation loss on the hike in is 3518 ftDOWN. Elevation gain on the hike in 2060 ftUP.

Thanks to https://bigsurtrailmap.net/ for the cool route metrics tool for this info. Not to mention all the other info!

WORK on the Big Sur Trail beyond Cisco Creek. This section of the trail is moderately brushy. The work is challenging but very rewarding to see the clear sections.

This will be a good introduction to backpacking and trailwork. You must be able to participate in the entire trip. Exceptions approved by the leader in advance.

THE WORK:

There is work for all abilities. Beginner to expert. Tools and instruction provided for brushing/tread work. The work location doesn't have a lot of poison oak. Long sleeves and long pants are recommended even for the hike in.

MEET: Big Sur Multi Agency Facility 7 A.M. DON'T BE LATE! Meet right in front of the Multi Agency Facility, in the 10-minute parking lot, not in the large parking lot at the trailhead.

IMPORTANT: Meetup directions may not be the best. In your mapping program, search for:
Big Sur Station, 47555 CA-1, Big Sur, CA 93920

The Big Sur Multi Agency Facility is at Big Sur Station, on the east (inland) side of Highway One, about a half mile south of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. For those coming from the north, after you pass Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, you cross the Big Sur River on an inconspicuous bridge. Then as you start the uphill, use the left turn lane to turn in to the Multi Agency Facility. If you go over a larger bridge, and get to the Post Office and the Big Sur Bakery, you have gone too far.

LEADER APPROVAL REQUIRED due to the access issues; contact leader for acceptance on this trip and meeting details.
